Czechs lead world in fighting light pollution

The Czech Republic is the first country to adopt a dark skies law with real teeth.

Why can’t we see the stars any more?

Why can’t we see the stars any more?

One picture: worth a million stars. This NASA photo tells the whole story. It’s captioned simply “Earth’s city lights.” View it here: (more…)

What does ‘community’ mean?

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

Soliciting ideas, thoughts, input:

In what ways do we create community in our lives? In what ways do we access community? What are all the various (even esoteric) forms of community?

What do we “get” from community?

How do we manage “community” in (more…)

Real Secret of Living Well: ‘Wellness’ has little or nothing to do with diet, exercise, or sunscreen

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

by Ken Winston Caine

Wellness is not about the absence of illness or malady.

It’s not about diet, exercise, or using sunscreen. Paying attention to those things can be useful, but they don’t create a vibrant state of wellness.

At the heart of the Spirit of Wellness Work™ that I’ve been developing, documenting, practicing, researching and sharing over the past decade is this simple truth:

A brief history and report on the state of the art of naturopathy in the U.S. and U.K.

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

The following is excerpted from the Wikipedia entry “naturopathy” and seems fairly balanced and reasonably accurate to me. Which is rare in writings about naturopathy these days since two distinct factions are duking it out in a sometimes nasty spin war. This Wikipedia entry is not 100% spin-free, but close enough to represent a thorough overview. The full, (more…)

Stop the naturopathy wars. CNME’s medically trained naturopaths need a DISTINCT title

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

This is an open call to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and the related Council on Naturopathic Medical Education, and their legislative lobbyists:

Please declare peace.

It’s time to negotiate an end to all the disparaging and contentious infighting among the various factions of naturopaths in America.

The solution is simple — even if a bit tough to swallow. The much smaller, but better financed and better trained group — which has much more at stake and deserves to be licensed — I’m talking about the AANP/CNME faction — should immediately (more…)

Back when you couldn’t buy yogurt in the grocery — unless my mother had made a batch that week — a Mother’s Day memory

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

Yogurt was not something you could buy in a typical grocery store 40 or 50 years ago.

You certainly couldn’t find it sweetened, pre-mixed, in 30 different flavors in little plastic cups.

In fact, most people had no idea what yogurt was. But I did. Because my mother made it. And sold it. And we ate it. Along with her coarse, nasty, raw-wheat-germ bread and muffins.

That was bread in our house those years. No white flour — except for the occasional birthday cake. No candy at home, except on Christmas. No toasted wheat germ. Just raw wheat germ. Which has a bitter flavor and aftertaste. Toasting the wheat germ degrades its nutritional value. Think my Dad got that from Adele Davis. Or J. I. Rodale.

We had brewer’s yeast drinks daily — which I still like. And a handful of carefully chosen vitamins laid out for us. And raw sunflower seeds for snacks. And for treat, “wheat germ candy.”

Wheat germ candy was wheat germ and powdered milk and honey mixed together and pressed out (more…)

So disappointed in Armand Morin

Friday, May 12th, 2006

Armand Morin is a bright young man, an infopreneur, who says he’s just happened to have made $25 million over the internet since 1996.

He made the bulk of it by creating and marketing products needed by other infopreneuers. Marketing to other marketers.

Now he’s breaking the internet, just to squeeze a few more bucks on the sly. Greedy. Truly “black hat,” as he calls it. Too bad.

I bought my last-ever product from him a couple weeks ago. I’d bought at least one earlier product from him. I think it was year 2000. He came out with the (more…)

BMW unveils $10,000, 188 mpg, nearly pollution-free city car

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

It’s just a concept car, at this point, but super cool.

Check out the Left Lane News article and photos – and crash-test video.

Really unique feature? It has gyroscopic stability and tilts like a motorcycle in curves, giving it extreme maneuverability and super-safe cornering.

Biggest drawback? Top speed is 50 mph. Couldn’t they bump that up to 80 or 90? Then this would be more than just a “city” car. And would be practical for U.S. cities where 50 mph is just too slow for safe freeway driving.

(Thanks to Dr. Mercola for finding the Left Lane article.)
