Resolve the Top 10 Things Between You and a Great Life

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

When I read Tracy A.’s newest piece, Top 10 Things Between You and a Great Life, it felt eerie.

I thought, “This girl’s been reading my mail!”

Because, at one time or another, I’ve fallen into every one of these traps. And I bet you have, too.

Having them listed and explained eloquently, as Tracy does here (reprinted with permission), is a powerful resource for motivational behavior change… I expect to review the list often. Just to remind myself of the tempting and almost automatic habits, cop-outs and defensive behaviors to work around.

Top 10 Things Between You and a Great Life

by Tracy A.

If you’re not living the life you dream about (and if you’re like most people you’re not) then identifying what’s getting in your way could be the most valuable way you’ve ever spent your time. Here are the Top 10 Things that come Between You and a Great Life!

1. Playing it safe.

One of the hardest things for most people to do is to risk the level of success they’ve achieved in order to reach the next level, but playing it safe isn’t the way most people dream of living.

2. Being comfortable.

We all have a desire to coast at times but settling into your comfort zone is a death knell for an extraordinary life. Where in your life are you choosing comfortable over greatness?

3. Avoiding rejection.

If you’re like me you’re OK with taking risks as long as they’re not too risky! I’m not a big believer in jumping off cliffs and building wings on the way down; I just don’t believe that life has to be that frantic but I do know that my fear of rejection is one of the fears that I still struggle with and it’s been eye opening to take a look at how it really gets in my way.

4. Procrastinating.

We tell ourselves some fantastic stories to increase our level of comfort with not getting off our duff and going on there and really scuffling it up on the (more…)

Sad Case of Dr. Dolittle and the End of Life on the Earth as We Know It

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

by ken winston caine

Dr. Dolittle was very busy.

He was busy trying to decide things.

He was trying to decide: Should he do this? Or should he do that?

And if he did this, should he do it tomorrow or the day after?

And then, should he do it in yellow, or should he do it in blue? And would that be sky blue — as if the sky is still blue anywhere.

Dr. Dolittle decided to consult the internet.

Is there anywhere where the sky is still truly blue? And exactly what shade of blue is sky blue anyway? Does it have, for instance, a PMS number — one of the numbers that printers and designers consult on a chart as they mix pigments in order to assure consistency in colors from job to job and across the industry?

Or, Dr. Dolittle wondered, with computer graphics the standard now, do printers still use PMS numbers?

He decided to consult the internet.

Dr. Dolittle is very, very busy.

Dr. Dolittle fired up his computer.

He planned to Google whether printers still use PMS numbers. Whether he should do this or that.

Whether tomorrow or the day after.

Whether in blue, or yellow, if the day after.

But first, he thought as the computer came to life, I should check my email.

And that caused him to recall six or seven emails that earlier in the morning he had been thinking that he needed to send.

A couple were especially urgent. And a couple were to respond to people who had emailed but to whom he had not responded for several days. One he hadn’t replied to for more than a week. Better do it now, before he forgets, he thought.

Otherwise those people will think that he is impolite. Or doesn’t like them any more. Or is incompetent.

Or dead.

One absolutely must respond to emails.

He began re-composing in his mind a couple of the of the emails that earlier in the morning he had been thinking that he should send.

But it had been too early then. The computer was not on. And he had not had his tea. Or his breakfast.

He had not brushed his teeth.

One should never send an email before one has brushed their teeth.

Nor had he caught the top of the hour news on Morning Edition. And now, (more…)

How to eat fresh local foods in the winter — anywhere

Great video and great tips from Dr. Mercola on how to find locally grown produce — and other farm products — in the winter, no matter where you live. As well as why this is good for your health and the health of the planet.

URGENT: Use this link NOW to tell EPA to regulate Carbon Dioxide pollution

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Passing on this urgent call to action from Cathy Zoi:

Dear ken winston,

Friday is the last day to voice your opinion on whether the EPA -- the Environmental Protection Agency -- should regulate carbon dioxide pollution, the primary cause of the climate crisis. This is a big deal.

The EPA is taking public comment, before making a ruling.

Of course, special interests -- like the oil and coal lobbies -- are working overtime to defeat a positive ruling and have already gotten thousands of comments submitted in opposition.

Most people don't know about this opportunity for public comment, so your voice can make a real difference. And with a new president in the White House, it's likely that someone will actually be listening. Submit your public comment to the EPA here:

http://www.RepowerAmerica.org/EPA

In April 2007 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency has the authority to regulate carbon dioxide if it is harming our health and welfare. After more than a year of delay, the EPA is finally now requesting public comments on whether carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping pollutants are endangering our health and our climate.

Join us, and send a message about how crucial it is to reduce harmful carbon dioxide pollution. That you expect the EPA to (more...)

We CAN become energy independent in 10 years and SAVE THE ECONOMY at the same time

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Here’s the challenge, in 3 minutes, with a beat to it.

by Ken Winston Caine

The U.S. CAN become 100% energy independent in 10 years and REBUILD THE ECONOMY at the same time, using existing clean-energy technologies.

I’ll show you a longer video in a moment that gives the specifics.

The video may make it seem simple. It’s not. To do this would require the type of will and vision and excitement and investment of the land-a-man-on-the-moon-in-10 years Apollo Project initiated by President Kennedy.

It will require the type of will and vision and excitement and investment of the interstate freeway system project spearheaded by President Eisenhower (which took a bit longer than 10 years — about 25 for the four major east-west arteries to be complete from coast to coast. But one section of I-70, through the particularly beautiful and delicate Glenwood Canyon in the Colorado Rockies wasn’t completed until shortly after I left my assignment as a reporter up there in the early ’90s).

Creating a nationwide clean-energy production and distribution system and economy is a huge undertaking.

The biggest challenge?

Political.

Because the fossil-fuel-based energy monopolies and their related support industries wield tremendous pressure and will not simply smile, nod and agree to be replaced.

And all those people whose jobs are dependent upon the fossil-fuel energy economy must be absolutely sure in the assurance that they will be retrained and transitioned to good, sustainable new-economy jobs and financially assisted in the process. And that must be part of any 10-year plan if the transformation is to win the public support it needs in order to get moving.

Shifting to a clean energy economy will require a sustained public and governmental mandate.

How can this be accomplished with existing clean technologies? Here’s a 27-minute video that spells out, plainly, step by step, how the U.S. can become 100% energy independent in 10 years using existing wind and solar technologies, and by moving to zero-emission technologies for cars. (The video embedded above is a teaser only.)

NOTE: Skip forward to 2:20 to get past the courtesy greetings and acknowledgments and into the exciting stuff.

Here is more about each of the challenges involved in converting to a clean energy economy in 10 years: (more…)

What can you do?

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

by Ken Winston Caine

Georgia Nichols asks, “What can you do to make life better for yourself and others?”

That’s a great question to ask.

A great focusing question.

A great legacy-creation-inspiring question.

Had any good dreams lately?

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

“The weird thing about dreams is that you have to stay awake to make them come true.”
– Georgia Nichols
